LANDFILL Gas System Modeling AND OPTIMIZATION

Project Overview

Effective landfill gas collection is critical for both operational performance and environmental compliance. For this project, Vikek Environmental Engineers was engaged to evaluate and optimize the existing Gas Collection and Control System (GCCS) for a landfill site in Oregon. Using the advanced hydraulic modeling software Pipe2024 by KYPIPE, we developed a high-resolution model of the existing system to simulate gas behavior under real-world conditions.

Modeling Approach

Key system components—including gas wells, piping infrastructure, valves, and blowers—were input into the model using precise survey data such as elevation and pipe dimensions. Methane properties were modeled using both standard parameters and client-specific gas composition data.

A vacuum-based system simulation allowed us to estimate flow rates and vacuum pressures at each wellhead, enabling us to identify inefficiencies and compliance gaps. The modeling tool provided a flexible framework for assessing the system’s performance across a range of operational scenarios.

Outcome

Our analysis yielded actionable recommendations to improve the efficiency and reliability of the GCCS. The insights supported regulatory compliance efforts and informed operational decision-making. The use of advanced modeling significantly reduced uncertainty, streamlined troubleshooting, and enhanced the client’s confidence in system performance.
